N95 fit testing and respirator masks

Ever wonder how staff and care providers are fit tested for their N95 mask?   When Katherine Wilson RN, IPAC lead,  isn’t busy developing and revising policies related to IPAC or providing IPAC education to staff, she completes N95 fit testing for staff.

N95 respirator masks are a special type of mask that protect the user from breathing in very small particles. These masks have different sizes and are fitted for each person. Fit testing uses a sweet or bitter solution that is pumped into the hood that is worn (as pictured). If the N95 mask is the right size and has a proper fit, the person will not taste the solution. Fit testing is done every 2 years as a person’s face may change over time.

A special thanks to Cindy our Administrator for posing for a picture during her fit test!
